Star Trek: Horizon

One of my passions as a science fiction buff is Star trek, a universe as complex and storied as any in popular culture. Back in 2012, when I was riding high on being a staff writer for a AAA rated video game (Kingdoms of Amalur, which failed to launch), I set a five-year goal to become a Star Trek author. Unfortunately, due in part to a changing fiction market, and also due to the fact that I’ve been through several personal upheavals since then, that goal was not to be realized. Even so, I finally decided that because the world of Star Trek fan fiction is so healthy, and CBS has indicated no hostility toward the writers who engage in it, I decided to give it a shot.

The premise behind Star Trek: Horizon is that this is the series I would have liked to see continuing forward with the Next Generation era after Voyager returns from the Delta Quadrant. The Dominioon War has been over for three years, but the after-effects are still being felt. Starfleet lost a number of ships and personnel, and many of the member worlds of the Federation are becoming dissatisfied with the state of affairs. Some are even considering secession. In addition to this, the enemies of the Federation are seeking to exploit these signs of weakness.

The Horizon is a newly launched Sovereign class starship led by Captain Sean Sheppard, their mission is to rise to the challenges presented in this post-war era and help the United Federation of Planets re-establish themselves as a force of stability, compassion, and freedom. In addition to this, the Horizon still maintains Starfleet’s standard mission of exploration and boldly going where no one has gone before.

Left to right: Security Chief Ipesh Nod (Bajoran), Tactical Officer Tavika (Romulan), First Officer Kevia Turner (Human), Captain Sean Sheppard (Human), Science Officer Ch’Qahrok (Andorian), Chief Medical Officer Julian Bashir (Human, genetically enhanced, canon character), and finally Chief Engineer Adriana Cunha (Human).

The following is a little bit about the main characters in the series, including the actors I would cast to play them:

Captain – Sean Sheppard
Human male (played by Robert Downey Jr.)
Born on Earth in 2324

  • Was first officer aboard the USS Robinson, the Galaxy-class vessel that Benjamin Sisko would take command of following his return.
  • Holds with Starfleet ideals, though is not always a straight shooter… which happens to be the reason he was selected to undertake this mission.
  • Inspired by Beethoven, Constantine the Great, and Barack Obama

First Officer – Kevia Turner
Human Female (played by Regina King)
Born on Barisa Prime in 2332

  • Has some non-borg cybernetic implants as the result of injuries sustained in the Dominion War.
  • Served as a Lieutenant aboard the Lexington, a Nebula-class vessel that explored the Shackleton Expanse.
  • Received a reprimand for disobeying a direct order during a first-contact situation.

Science Officer – Sass Ch’qahrok
Andorian male (played by David Morrissey)
Born on Andoria in 2325

  • Was one of the rare aliens allowed to study at the Vulcan Science Academy.
  • Personality is very formal, unemotional, and stiff, much like the Vulcans he studied with.
  • Served aboard the USS Voyager during its return from the Delta Quadrant.

Chief Medical Officer – Julian Bashir (yes, he’ll eventually return to DS9)
Genetically enhanced human male (played by Alexander Siddig)
Born on Earth in 2341

  • Just go watch DS9

Tactical – Tavika
Romulan female (Played by Lauren Cohan)
Born on Tantalus Penal Colony in 2341

  • Parents were Romulan prisoners. She was freed at birth, but raised by caretakers on the Tantalus Penal Colony until her parents’ sentences were served.
  • Allowed to enter Starfleet due to the fact that she had no affiliation with the Romulan Star Empire.
  • Has long hair, ridged brows, and embraces her emotional side.

Security – Ipesh Nod
Bajoran Male (played by Chris Evans)
Born on Bajor in 2340

  • Former member of the Maquis. Recruited by Starfleet after the Maquis destruction.
  • Escaped from Cadassian occupied Bajor as a teen.
  • Capable in a fight and proud of it.

Chief Engineer – Adriana Cunha
Human Female (played by Sophie Turner)
Born on Earth in 2355

  • Something of an engineering prodigy
  • Was on Mars in the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, working under Doctor Xin Ra-Havreii designing the Luna class starship.
  • Emotionally immature, but kind and happy to collaborate.
